HKDA GDA 2011

The HKDA Global Design Awards 2011, organized by the Hong Kong Designers Association, marked a milestone as Hong Kong’s first international design competition, inviting entries from designers worldwide. The awards sought to foster exchange between local and global creatives while showcasing Hong Kong’s design excellence to an international audience.

The theme Gold Rush became the driving inspiration behind the visual identity, drawing a vivid parallel between the stages of a design competition and the process of prospecting for gold. From the excitement of discovering gold ore to the precision of weighing its value, each phase of the awards journey was symbolized by distinct props: a pickaxe for the Call for Entries, a scale for judging, and a bell to announce the winners during the award presentation ceremony. The bold, rugged typeface designed for the awards reflected the pioneering spirit of the Gold Rush era, while a set of visuals and postcards featuring individuals holding golden pickaxes captured the energy, diversity, and determination of the design process. Together, the identity celebrated the transformative journey of uncovering creative brilliance.
