The past is continuing

“The Past is Continuing” exhibition brings together 18 contemporary artists who reinterpret tradition by drawing inspiration from historical and cultural artifacts in the Hong Kong Heritage Museum’s permanent collection. Through various media—including painting, ceramics, product design, fashion design, new media, music, sculpture, photography, and installation—these artists explore how traditional philosophies and aesthetics can be reimagined in a modern context. The exhibition serves as a dialogue between past and present, offering new perspectives on cultural continuity and transformation.

The key visual design symbolizes the fusion of historical influence and contemporary creation, represented by a dynamic icon that merges elements from each artist’s work and their respective museum-inspired artifacts. A “time tunnel” motif, along with integrated environmental graphics, weaves these connections, illustrating the ongoing journey from heritage to modern interpretation. Unlike traditional exhibits in a single hall, each artwork is placed near the museum artifact it references, transforming the entire museum space into an immersive exhibition.

To enhance visitor engagement, a stamp collection activity encourages guests to explore different exhibits. Visitors can collect stamps of the exhibition’s key visual on their pamphlets as they journey through the museum, deepening their connection to the artworks and historical pieces on display. This interactive element creates a memorable experience, guiding viewers through a blend of cultural legacy and modern artistic perspectives.
